Character Name: Nura Nal (Dox)
Series: DC Comics' Legion of Super-Heroes v.5
Timeline: The very last appearance where she and Querl are watching the monitor for signs of Superboy-Prime
Canon Resource Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nura_Nal
Character Background: Nura was born to two strict parents upon the planet Naltor, where, as she grew, she was discovered to be a very powerful precognitive, and soon had much weight placed upon her shoulders on the expectations of the people around her.
On Naltor, natives are gifted with the ability to see the future. But where others see 20 seconds ahead, Nura Nal saw 30 seconds. This led her into law enforcement, but she left her training as a Precommando to join the Legion, something that Naltor took as a great slight to their codes. On Earth, her fellow Legionnaires regarded her as somewhat of an airhead because her visions often left her oblivious to her present surroundings, as well as the bubbly, party-girl attitude she exhibited through her propositions for drinks and nights out dancing at Legion-sanctioned parties. In her world, the Legion are celebrities to the youth. Hero-worshipped to great extremes, and known asthe enemies of reason and results to the "square" adults of the highly-policed galaxy. The Legion stands as a true form of rebellion and their motto of "Eat it, Grandpa!" Honestly. They can be perceived as rude and abraisive, but they had their points.
The world that Nura lived in was highly policed. Highly restricted. Children were put on literal leashes, given chips that tracked them through the galaxy-wide tracking system, the Public Service, and even put through reprograming and abuse of many kinds. The idea: children need to be controlled so that they don't get out of control.
The Legion thought this was just bullshit.
Naltor was a particular big issue planet, of course. Lucky Dream Girl, it was her home planet.
Dream Girl returned to Naltor with a group of Legionnaires when thousands were driven mad by "dream deprivation." The Legion noticed that only "underagers" were affected and soon uncovered the truth. The Public Service technology used to monitor underagers was itself negatively affecting Naltor's youth. While on Naltor, Nura received a particularly disturbing vision of great catastrophe. Naltor's High Seer had seen it as well, and sought to spare his people from experiencing the vision.
Dream Girl's began to encounter blackness in her visions. Part of her knew what this meant. When the Legion's battle with Lemnos came to a head, the villain sent suicide bombers into the Legion plaza and headquarters. As the building collapsed, Dream Girl guided others to safety, but perished herself when the plaza fell.
Brainiac 5 had always acted as though Dream Girl were an anomaly or an annoyance. In truth, he was in love with her. Upon her death, he acted immediately to preserve her body—and, he hoped, her soul. He deduced that a person's soul was merely energy and he housed Nura inside one of his force fields to keep hers from escaping. Her body remained in suspended animation until he could finalize his plans to resurrect her. Her fellow Legionnaires held a special memorial where one Legionnaire at-large, Reflecto, was delusional that she'd been his girlfriend, and caused chaos until Saturn Girl and other Legionnaires were able to subdue and stop his rampage.
Brainiac 5's plan involved using the powerful mental powers of their former foe, Lemnos, to restore Dream Girl's psyche and soul to her body. Brainy told few of his plans and soon absconded with Dream Girl's and Lemnos' bodies. He piloted an ancient L.E.G.I.O.N. craft into space along with Light Lass and Element Lad and Atom Girl, all of whom were drafted to help him reanimate his love. Using the power of a pulsar star plus Lemnos and the Legionnaires ... something happened. Dream Girl's body disappeared. Brainy was furious. But later, while sleeping, Dream Girl visited him. She was fully cognizant but now existed only on this metal/astral plane. Truly, a "dream" girl.
Meanwhile, Naltor's High Seer was demanding the return of Nura's body and Rol Purtha, Dream Boy, arrived to replace Nura in the Legion. Needless to say the other Legionnaires, especially Brainiac 5, were not content with this arrangement, seeing as Dream Boy was replacing their deceased friend just like that at the whims of Naltor. Dream Boy was very much aware of this neglect, as well as the first to learn of Dream Girl's new state of existence when he received a visit from Dream Girl in his sleep. He soon revealed this to others, including Brainy. Brainiac 5 kept this a secret, but Dream Girl was not limited to visiting him. She spent time with other Legionnaires, though they remebered her visits not, and attempted to watch over and protect them from her place upon the Spirit Plane. Saturn Girl also discovered Nura's presence when she was forced to enter Brainy's mind in his sleep.
In this spectral form, Nura could easily have chosen to move on the afterlife, but remained tethered by her love for Brainiac 5. Querl found a medium named Meander to serve as a host body for Nura, so that they could enjoy a true-blue date in the flesh. While inside Meander, Nura was without her powers and failed to "see" an attack from Princess Projectra. Projectra needed to eliminate Dream Girl in order to carry out a plot of vengeance against the Legion, believing that Nura would foresee Projectra's attack and warn the Legion. She freed some of the baser aspects of Brainiac 5’s psyche, leading to a night of carnal passion, lust and desire which manifested as demons that attacked Dream Girl. This happened just as Querl proposed marriage to her. Nura survived but was left blind—in both sight and foresight. Querl encouraged her to enter the beyond, but she refused, agreeing to marry him instead.
Much later on, Querl was able to return Nura’s spirit to a clone of her body, as was the same for the “data” of the other Legionnaires after a dangerous mission in cyber-space, in which their bodies were badly damaged during an attack.
Later on, they were both on watch of Super-Boy Prime, making sure that he did not run amuck and attempt to cross the multiverses to cause damage as he had done in the past. They also continued to be part of the Legion, in their role in defending the galaxy from any villains having a rotten day.
Entranceway~~:
And then Nura arrived in Entranceway. She was confused, concerned, but she handled her surroundings the way she usually would handle the discombobulating. With humor. Nura sarcastically made quips and utilized her wit to help her through the confusion. She didn't make many friends (or attempt to) during her stay, but she did attempt to communicate openly with residents of the mansion. She took to exploring the mansion often and even interacted with the likes of the Cheshire Cat, going so far as to give him an amusing name.
She experienced one event, and was so shaken by the likes of the event, that she decided to prepare a request for a security force that would handle the atrocities and malfunctions of further chaos within Wonderland.
Nura can be confusing, frustrating, irritating, all from her constant trait in which she reveals one thing at a time, at a pace that most people find all of the above. She finds this both amusing, as a game, but it is also a way that she can stall and find out for herself what exactly it is that she is seeing.
She might be called somewhat of an immature child at times, which she may be unable to perceive seeing as she isn’t quite sure what marks a “childish” attitude (she can see it, and she can call people on it, but she’s unable to see it when she does it herself), only seeing her ways as having some good fun. This also helps her relate better with children, and has made Nura very fond of the youth.
Nura has a sharp tongue. But she doesn’t use it all the time. She usually reserves it for people who annoy her, and those she finds it amusing to use her wit against. For example, when she and her teammates were up against her old workmates upon Naltor, she told one of the lawmen that his wife was going to leave him in a week. She also used her wit constantly against her teammate, Brainiac 5, who she later came to have feelings for. She found it refreshing to put her wit up against his, as he treated her differently than most men treated her. But Nura can also extend her brattish attitude in the fact that she enjoys teasing and taunting people. She gets a kick out of driving people up the wall and if her husband's sanity is any indication, she makes a life-hobby out of this somewhat sadistic talent. She of course uses the terms "endearing" and "for your own good" often with her cajoling, and even honestly, genuinely claims that she acts so in order to avoid being a Downer Girl, and to also snap other people out of their Downer Person moods.
A laugh, swish of her hips, a tease and taunt, but she wants the best for you. She wants you to smile. She wants you to have fun. Especially if you are a child.
Nura can also be somewhat vain about her appearance. She’s not afraid to wear tight clothing to show off her curves, or those belly-revealing tops that she’s so fond of. (she also takes particular care of her hair. In this effect, she doesn’t take well to insults to her appearance.) She also sometimes plays dumb to make the illusion of not being so thoughtful and attentive, when, really, she has an attention to nuance and detail, and will almost always quietly log things into the back of her mind for later use.
Despite her flaws, if you truly get to know Nura, you will find her a kind, openly friendly young woman, who occasionally puts her foot in her mouth. She has the determination and the passion to be a hero, to give it her all. She will defend you with her life, and even once, she lost her own life to save the lives of the youth she protected so dearly. If you are her friend, she’ll care for you dearly, and if you are her loved one, she’ll give you all her love. She’s very passionate.
Abilites/Special Powers: Dream Girl possesses the highest level of precognition on her homeworld of Naltor. Where others see twenty seconds into the future, she sees thirty. While receiving a premonition, Dream Girl loses consciousness to the real world. While waking visions are common, but short, greater visions come during full sleep. Nura’s precogging is also connected to a plane somewhere between the Spirit Plane and the Beyond, called the Dreaming. When you suddenly remove her from her place so fast, it puts stress upon her connection with the Dreaming.
Her physical abilities can easily be described as agile and fluid. She can move very quickly, thanks to countless training as a child, in which she honed her fighting skills to follow through with her precognitive ability. In this, she’s very talented at various forms of martial arts (some fictional) and has even trained under the Legion’s most seasoned martial arts’ major, Karate Kid, to further hone her fighting skills.
Third-Person Sample: Hopping.
Hopping.
Never before had Nura given such doubts to a word. Seated on the floor of the training room of Legion HQ, she watched as Karate Kid, her dutiful instructor, explained the method of hopping during preparing a defense or offense maneuver through martial arts. He hopped on the balls of his feet, then threw himself forward, and straight into the punching bag he'd hung from the rafters. Nura had seen Micro Lad tie off the gears to the bag herself, so she knew how durable the athletic equipment truly was.
...and then Karate kid just tore that assumption away as the punching bag flew into the wall, the clang clang sounding as the gears were unhinged.
Nura, Imra, Ayla, and Salu all were stone-faced.
Karate Kid nodded, resting his feet on the floor, crossing his arms.
"...and that's how you effectively use hopping."
It wasn't that Nura doubted her sensei (as Karate Kid was referred by in the training room), it was only...he often used the oddest methods in his teaching. Though effective in the long run, it wasn't uncommon for a few heckles and chuckles to make their way out into the open during every training session. Glancing at her fellow trainees, Nura could see the beginnings of another amusing round of wry looks start to take center stage. She hide her eagerness for mischief behind a straight-laced facial expression.
Ayla made the first comment. "So basically, a rabbit?" Nura and Imra cracked grins. Salu was stern, though some amusement showed in he muscles of her face. Karate Kid lacked jovial qualities in his mode of professionalism.
"If you want to be nonsensical about it, yes."
Almost instantly, Nura's arm rose and her hand waved in the air. Karate Kid nodded his head in approval. "Do we get carrots after this?"
"Very funny."
"I thought so."
